Things Were So Much Easier Back In The Days

|
Back when I was in school, I remember my parents bought school supplies way before school started. I don't remember ever needing additional supplies afterward. Nowadays, each teacher gives their students a list of class, home, and donation supplies. My son, who is in 10th grade this fall, texted me on the first day of school immediately afterschool with a MOM -  I NEED SAFETY GOGGLE!!! NEED BY TOMORROW!! Then he texted a list of supplies he needed the next day. I went around town looking for safety goggle for him. I ended up buying safety glasses because none of the stores I went to sold safety goggles. I told my son to show it to his teacher first before opening the package. Before we went on the goggle search, we were at Office Max looking for the rest of school supplies for my son and daughter. My youngest daughter didn't need anything except for a box of Ziploc bags for the class but the two older ones need A LOT. There were so many students and parents at the store, it was like an after Thanksgiving sale! When we found everything we needed, we went to get in line. My golly, the line stretched so far back, I couldn't even see the end of the line. When it was finally our turn to pay, my eyes nearly popped out when I saw the total: $116.00!! I was looking at everything the cashier scanned so I knew he didn't miscanned any item. When we were walking out, my eldest daughter who was with me asked me was the total $16. How I wish it was only $16 :(

There goes children in secondary schools.
Spending will be way much more should they enter university.
Life a cycle, our parents pay for us, we pay for our kids & soon they'll pay for theirs...

Hahahah, that's the effect of inflation.... things were really not the same back in the good old days.

There was no internet,so we can take our pace, less stress and all.

Really? They give the list today and it is needed by tomorrow?

Be thankful... in Singapore, even kindergarten kids are going to school in trolley bags. No, not because they like to imitate their globe-trotting parents. The stuff they have to take to school is so heavy, it may cause spinal deformation!

Maybe Steve Jobs can convince schools around the world to switch exclusively to using iPAD for teaching and learning ;-P

I wonder if we turn the clock back how will those parents who have 7-10 children managed to take care of their children needs? Guess those days the activities in school are lesser and nothing much to spend further. Now I can see children going for tuition class, ballet class, piano, art class, karate class, music class and what nots the poor mom/dad would go bonkers just sending 7 children to separate classes..

I hear ya! One would think with how much we pay for tuition that it'd be all-inclusive... but nnnoooo!

I can certainly relate to this experience, especially when my kids were at elementary school. And I thought it only happen to us in our Malaysian school system.

I remember having to recycle all the stationery supplies and not simply spend $ unnecessarily. Kids nowadays are expensive!

no kidding.
I findmyself feeling suspicious and resentful when there are 2 boxes of crayons on the required list, and 6 glue sticks, and high lighters? really, my kindergartener is using highlighters? or is her teacher?
grr..

Yeap, things were so much easier then! All we needed were just stationery items and practice books.

Things are very expensive nowadays. Today, there are many activities carried out in schools and more money is needed. Many parents are complaining but nothing much can be done. Parents nowadays have to work hard for $$$$$

I don't remember getting extra supplies either when I was going to grade school. On the positive side, ask your son to save everything so your younger daughter can use them later. What are donation supplies?

Hi Rosebelle, Think this way, you are giving the economy a boost, as well what with the Financial Institutions CEOS needing their bonuses....
And factories picking up speed on safety goggles....ha ha.
But that was some money you spent. Imagine if 6 kids?
Have fun and keep a song in your heart, Lee.

Oh yes, I remember my parents buying us school supplies and then turnig around having to buy everything all over again. I do not look forward to it when my kids are in school!

I wonder why the school do not have goggles for the kids to wear?

I too used to questions why my children needed so much for school supplies, but everything was indeed used. I think our schools are struggling with budgets and parents are picking up the piece!

$116.00!!!! Wow! Back when I went to school, we were given a list of things we needed a few weeks before school started (it was a private school) and that's all we had to buy. Everything else like safety goggles were provided by the school. Do they still have back to school sales these days? I still can't believe how much things cost these days!
